Join us for the Play On Shakespeare educational series First Reads. This week we’ll be reading and discussing Much Ado About Nothing, translated by Ranjit Bolt with dramaturgy by Lydia Garcia.
First Reads aims to replicate that initial table read on the first day of rehearsal—the questions that come up, the discovery of rhythm, the wild world of Shakespeare. We’ll read and discuss the play with a group of actors, a director, playwright, and dramaturg. All over Zoom! We will be joined via live-stream by students and others who will be able to engage in the discussions as the readers weave through the play.

Ranjit Bolt was educated at The Perse School, Cambridge, and at Balliol College, University of Oxford. He workedas an investment analyst and adviser for eight years, before concentrating on theatre translation from the end of 1990. His acclaimed translations for the theatre include works by Molière, Seneca, Sophocles, Corneille, Beaumarchais, Brecht, Goldoni, and Zorilla. He was awarded an OBE for his services to literature in 2003.

Lydia Garcia is a dramaturg, educator, and facilitator. She has served as the Literary Manager and Resident Dramaturg at Marin Theatre Company as well as the Resident Dramaturg at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, where she served as the production dramaturg for All’s Well that Ends Well, Sense and Sensibility, Henry IV Parts 1 and 2, The Yeomen of the Guard, Vietgone, The Count of Monte Cristo, Long Day’s Journey Into Night, Fingersmith, The Happiest Song Plays Last, Water by the Spoonful, Richard III, A Streetcar Named Desire, Cymbeline, Romeo and Juliet, Medea/Macbeth/Cinderella, The Imaginary Invalid, August: Osage County, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, She Loves Me, The Music Man, Dead Man’s Cell Phone, The Servant of Two Masters, Much Ado about Nothing, and Quixote. In addition to her dramaturgical work, Lydia was a resident lecturer and teacher at OSF, as well as a trained staff facilitator for issues of diversity, inclusion, and equity. She holds a BA in English and American Literature and Language from Harvard University and an MFA in Dramaturgy and Dramatic Criticism from the Yale School of Drama, and is a member of the Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas (LMDA).
